Baltimore MARITIME MUSEUM
The Baltimore Maritime Museum features in its collection four National Historic Landmarks, namely, the USS Submarine Torsk, the Lightship Chesapeake, US Coast Guard Cutter Taney and the Seven-Foot Knoll Lighthouse. The Torsk not only distinguished herself by sinking the last two enemy warships of WWII, but went on to a great career as a training sub, diving over 11,000 times. She trained the first crew of the USS Nautilus, many of whom accompanied the submarine on her historic voyage under the North Pole.
The Taney remains the only surviving defender from the attack on Pearl Harbor. During WWII, she participated in the Pacific Theatre and as a convoy leader in the North Atlantic. She then served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, finally becoming active in fisheries patrol and drug intradiction. After 50 years of service, she was retired in 1986.
The Lightship Chesapeake served in the pre sat-nav days, warning mariners of their approach to the continent. She spent her days off the mouths of the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, where her powerful beacon, fog horn and bright red hull provided an early welcome and final farewell to sailors. The Seven-Foot Knoll Lighthouse, built of wrought iron in Baltimore in 1855, spent over a century literally screwed into the bottom of the Bay, near the mouth of Baltimore Harbor. The screwpile technique allowed early engineers to anchor structures before the advent of modern pile driving methods. The lighthouse is the first of this type to be used on the Bay.
Each site has a well-prepared docent, ready to explain the significance of each exhibit, as well as the displays that they contain.
The Museum is located just four blocks from the Convention Center.
