CAPTAIN DAVID B. MACFARLAND
IS AWARDED THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE GOLD MEDAL

The Department of Commerce has awarded its highest honor to Captain David B. MacFarland, (Ret.) of NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Capt. MacFarland will receive the Department of Commerce Gold Medal for his vision and leadership as director of NOAA’s National Ocean Service’s Office of Coast Survey. NOAA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The Department of Commerce Gold Medal Award is awarded to commerce employees who display distinguished performance and contributions that positively impact the mission of the Commerce Department. Captain MacFarland is being honored for his leadership, vision and dedication in transforming the Office of Coast Survey to an outward-reaching organization that responds to the navigation needs of a changing world.

“The National Ocean Service is honored to have such dedicated and passionate employees serving our nation,” said Rick Spinrad, assistant administrator of NOAA’s National Ocean Service. “They are all well deserving of this prestigious award.”

Capt. MacFarland and other recipients will be honored at a ceremony on September 18, 2003 at the Department of Commerce building in Washington, DC.

NOAA’s National Ocean Service balances environmental protection with economic prosperity in fulfilling its mission of promoting safe navigation, supporting coastal communities, sustaining coastal habitats and mitigating coastal hazards.

NOAA is dedicated to enhancing economic security and national safety through the prediction and research of weather and climate-related events and providing environmental stewardship of our nation’s coastal and marine resource.
