Judith Felber Freeman, deputy director of Washington state's Department of Fish and Wildlife, has been appointed deputy director of the National Marine Fisheries Service's Northwest regional office in Seattle.
Freeman has worked for the state's fish and wildlife department and its predecessor agency, the Department of Fisheries, since 1988. Before that she was a research scientist with the state's Department of Agriculture.
"Judith brings with her an enormous range of outstanding experience with fisheries management, habitat protection and the Endangered Species Act that will contribute greatly to our capabilities," said William Stelle, the Northwest region's director.
"I've known Judith and worked side by side with the state's Department of Fish and Wildlife for a number of years," Stelle said, "and I can't imagine a better, more effective person to be working with us on Pacific Northwest fisheries issues, especially groundfish and salmon."
As deputy director for the federal fisheries service's Northwest region, Freeman will help administer a division of the National Marine Fisheries Service with an annual budget of about $60 million and a staff of almost 350.
Freeman earned her bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley, and both her master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California at Riverside. She lives in Olympia.
