Event: Monitor National Marine Sanctuary Archaeological
Research, Recovery, and Stabilization Mission.

Dates: August 14 through August 31, 1995. Early notice is
provided as local accommodations may be difficult to secure.

Place: Hatteras, North Carolina.

Description: To stabilize this historic, Civil War-era's
shipwreck, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,
the U.S. Navy and The Mariners' Museum will cooperate in the
recovery, conservation, and display of the Monitor's
3,600-lb propeller from its resting place 230 feet below the
surface. This archaeological expedition is the culmination of
years of study and preparation. Its importance may be measured
in terms of securing the integrity of the shipwreck, and in the
unlikelihood of opportunities for such an effort existing in
the future. Weather permitting, NOAA divers will provide daily
video from the shipwreck site.
