COMMERCE SECRETARY BROWN ANNOUNCES NEW PACIFIC FISHERY MANAGEMENT COUNCIL APPOINTMENT

Secretary of Commerce Ronald H. Brown has announced the appointment of James H. Lone to complete Phillip M. Anderson's unexpired term on the Pacific Fishery Management Council.

The council, one of eight regional fishery management councils, works in partnership with the federal government to manage the nation's fishery resources.

Anderson held a seat on the Pacific Council for the state of Washington but resigned after taking a position at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Lone will complete the term that expires on August 10, 1996. Selections are made to replace outgoing members from candidates nominated by the governors of the affected states. Council members may serve no more than three consecutive terms.

The councils, established by the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act, prepare fishery management plans for marine fish stocks in their respective geographical areas of responsibility. The management plans are submitted for review by NOAAžs National Marine Fisheries Service, and approved by the Secretary of Commerce.

The councils represent diverse fisheries interests and are comprised of members whose combined knowledge and experience represent a balance of commercial and recreational fisheries interests for each geographical area concerned, and other fisheries' interests as well.

Pacific Council -- The Pacific Council includes members from the states of California, Washington, Oregon and Idaho. With the appointment of Lone, the obligatory voting members are:
