The Marine Technology Society; the MTS Washington, DC, Section and the Co-Participating Organizations are pleased to announce the MTS Ocean Community Conference ‘98, to be held from November 16 to 19, 1998 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland.

Recognizing the importance of the oceans, the United Nations has designated 1998 as the International Year of the Ocean (YOTO). The United States is using YOTO as an opportunity to direct attention on actions needed to ensure that the oceans continue to play their vital role in the nation's economy, environmental health, and maritime security. The Marine Technology Society is taking advantage of this national attention by focusing the Ocean Community Conference ‘98 on ‘Celebrating 1998, the International Year of the Ocean'.

The program for OCC ‘98 will include Plenary Sessions with overview presentations by invited speakers, parallel sessions with contributed papers, displays of marine products and services in the Exhibit Hall, Student Posters and tutorials. The Plenary Sessions will address four broad themes which are receiving national attention as part of YOTO and are of direct interest to the ocean community: Exploration in the Sea; Energy, Transportation & Communications; Sustainable Use of the Coastal Ocean; and the Ocean's Influence on Weather & Climate.
